El Salvador: Security Issues Prompt Updated Travel Warning
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |The U.S. Dept. of State has updated its travel warning to reflect ongoing security issues in El Salvador. Crime and violence continue to be serious problems throughout the country, and while U.S. citizens do not appear to be targeted specifically, 22 Americans have been murdered there in the past two years. Extortion, kidnapping and passport theft continue to pose real risks, and armed robbery of climbers and hikers in the national parks is common. The police protection available for tourists is very limited, and most crimes in El Salvador go unsolved. Visitors are encouraged to be vigilant of their surroundings at all times, avoid walking at night and using public transportation, and to enlist the services of a registered government guide in national parks.
