Crime in Australia’s cities is on a par with U.S. cities that have medium crime rates, so visitors should use the same level of caution they do in American cities. Police attribute armed robberies in Canberra and other cities to a growing problem with heroin addiction. Because of specific threats against Australia by al Qaeda for its participation in UN peacekeeping actions in East Timor, authorities have increased security measures throughout the country.
