Nepal
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Following the July 1 threat by Maoist supreme commander Prachanda to use “more violent means” if peace talks are not forthcoming or successful, the U.S. Embassy received information that Maoists may specifically target Americans, particularly in regions under Maoist control. As a result, the State Department recommends that Americans avoid road travel outside the Kathmandu Valley “unless they have reliable information that they can proceed safely in specific areas at specific times.” Maoists recently blocked all roads around Pokhara, preventing tourist departures for an extended period. Other areas have been blockaded without warning. Travel by air whenever possible.
