Tibet: China to Retain Restrictions on Foreign Tourists

Chinese officials did an about-face on their decision to reopen Tibet to foreigners May 1, saying that the region and its capital, Lhasa, will remain closed until further notice, probably at least until the Olympic torch passes through Tibet and possibly until the end of the Olympic Games. This decision does not affect Chinese tourists, however, who are being courted by tourism officials to come to Lhasa where they can enjoy the city’s popular sites without standing in lines because so few visitors are there. Ticket prices for the train from Beijing to Lhasa are frozen at winter rates, which are half the usual summer rates, as an incentive for Chinese tourists to travel there.
