Cambodia: New Cases of Bird Flu Confirmed
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |In January, the Ministry of Health confirmed five new cases of “bird flu” in humans, four of which were fatal. Also known as H5N1 or avian influenza, the relatively rare virus is transmitted only by direct contact with infected birds—never human-to-human. However, since the illness it causes is often fatal and has high endemic potential, authorities are taking swift measures to contain it. All but two of the cases occurred in outlying provinces where tourists are unlikely to go, and while the risk of visitors contracting bird flu is very low, any contact with live or dead birds should be avoided. Note that properly cooked food, including poultry, is not a potential contaminant.
