Indonesia: Rabies Resurfaces in Bali

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 18th, 2008 | Trackback

Health officials thought Bali was free of rabies until two dogs in Kuta were recently diagnosed with the disease. Kuta is a beach area popular with budget travelers and for decades has been a focal point of tourism on the island. An Australian health authority following the developments said there was no indication that the disease had spread to animals other than dogs, but warned travelers to avoid direct contact with dogs, cats, monkeys or other animals. Dogs roam free in many areas and monkeys are prevalent, especially at temples where they often pester visitors for food, sometimes reaching in pockets to look for morsels. Avoid displaying snacks in the presence of monkeys to avoid potential bites or scrapes. Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention immediately, and anyone who has visited Bali since August and was bitten or scratched should seek medical advice.
