Oman: Soccer Championship to Create Congestion in Muscat

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 8th, 2009 | Trackback

Oman is hosting the GCC Gulf Cup soccer tournament through Jan. 17 in Muscat, where authorities expect large celebrations and heavy traffic following all matches. Soccer tournaments in the region in the past have suffered from hooliganism, property damage from uncontrolled celebrations and extremely heavy traffic. The U.S. Embassy in Muscat encouraged citizens to avoid traveling around Muscat near the end of matches and afterwards. Two games will be played from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 14, with the final the evening of Jan. 17.
