Barbados: Ottawa Woman Remains in Coma After Beating

A Canadian woman from Ottawa remains in a coma after she and her daughter-in-law were brutally beaten with a piece of wood in a midday attack on Long Beach Feb. 28. In April 2008, two other Canadian women were attacked by a man with a knife on the same beach, also during the day. Such incidents often go unreported in the local press, so crimes of this sort may occur more often than they appear. Tens of thousands of tourists visit Barbados each year without incident, but these crimes are a reminder to remain vigilant at all times and to walk the beach with at least one other companion whenever possible.
