Namibia: Floods Create Emergency in Northern Districts
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The president declared a state of emergency in six northern districts where more than 90 people have died, 200,000 have been affected, and towns and crops have been devastated by heavy flooding. Crocodiles and hippos were reported swimming in the flood waters and attacking people. Authorities are concerned that the floods could cause food shortages and a cholera outbreak. The rains have diminished but the rainy season will continue for another month, and conditions could take a long time to return to normal.
