China: Beijing Battles Gridlock
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Beijing is trying to solve the riddle of gridlock as it sees 2,000 new cars a day enter the already packed streets and highways. The number of cars in the city has nearly doubled since 2005, with 4.7 million vehicles now crawling the streets. Officials are considering increasing the capacity of subways and buses and building new roads, and are encouraging residents to use public transit or bicycles, but with economic prosperity comes the desire to drive. Despite the gridlock, it’s still sometimes faster to drive than take the bus.
