France: Lourdes Grotto Under Repair
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The grotto at the Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes in southwestern France will be closed daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for repair work through Feb. 8. Pebbles have been falling from cracks in the rock ceiling and walls and pose a danger to worshippers below. Usually the grotto is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the 6 million annual visitors who come hoping to be cured of illnesses by the spring’s healing powers. Worshippers will still be able to pray outside the grotto while it is closed.
