Nepal: Power Blackouts Now 14 Hours a Day
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Electrical power has become so scarce that authorities imposed a 14-hour daily blackout schedule that is putting a strain on the local population and affecting all business and tourism operations. The blackout is actually closer to a 20-hour stoppage because the schedule calls for it to be lifted at 1 a.m. or 3 a.m., effectively giving the populace power for just a few hours during the business day. Authorities blame the drying up of rivers during the winter before the monsoon rains of summer, but the electricity system throughout the country is woefully inadequate to serve the nation’s needs.
