Chile: Volcano Eruption Disrupts Travel Plans

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | June 8th, 2011 | Trackback

An erupting volcano along the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex grounded numerous flights and sent ash across South America as far as southern Buenos Aires province. All flights between Buenos Aires and the Andean resorts of Bariloche, Esquel and Chapelco were canceled until at least June 12. Ash coated ski slopes in the area two weeks before the start of ski season. Some scientists suspect the recent 8.8 Chilean earthquake might have increased the likelihood of such volcanic activity due to shifting pressure in the earth’s tectonic plates. Those planning to travel to the region should contact their airlines and follow press reports regarding the ash cloud.
