Dominican Republic: Gangland Murders have Public Worried
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Gangland murders in public places have alarmed the public in Santo Domingo, where gunmen have most recently taken to motorcycles. The last 10 months have seen 20 victims fall prey to gunmen, even in clubs, dance halls and at bus-stops. Police have yet to charge anyone with the killings, meaning that it is uncertain as to whether the perpetrators are hired gunmen or part of a larger organization. Most of the violence has been in the greater Santo Domingo area, Santiago and San Cristóbal. While such criminal violence seldom involves tourists, travelers should be aware of these security concerns and plan accordingly.
