China: Cholera Outbreak on Hainan Island Contained

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 13th, 2008 | Trackback

South China’s resort island of Hainan saw 51 cases of cholera following October floods and a spell of warm weather, but officials reported that the outbreak has been contained and the threat has passed. Cholera has a short incubation period, from one to five days, and no new cases had been reported for 10 days when officials lifted a quarantine at Hainan University, which had been hit hard by the outbreak. Cholera is spread by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food. The disease is easily avoided by being scrupulous about drinking only purified water and eating only food that has been thoroughly cooked.
