Madagascar: Political Protests Turn Violent
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Three weeks of anti-government protests spurred by the mayor of Antananarivo flared into riots when mobs set fire to the state radio building and looted stores downtown. The political rivals began talks to resolve the crisis that has brought on roadblocks, an overnight curfew, a fuel shortage and many rumors of other crises. ATMs appeared to be on the verge of running out of cash. The situation remained volatile and travelers should stay vigilant and keep a low profile.
