Australia: Crocodile Hunting May Reopen to Visitors in Northern Territory
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Some 80,000 saltwater crocodiles live in the Northern Territory, more than anywhere else in Australia, and the state tourism minister has joined others in a call for the resumption of hunting safaris to cull the animals. The demand is becoming urgent after a crocodile killed an 11-year-old girl in a rural area near Darwin when she and her friends were swimming. The federal government stopped international crocodile hunters in 2005 by banning the export of skin and skulls, but pressure to add hunting to other crocodile management plans may force a change in policy. Swimming in rivers and streams anywhere near the coast should be done only if local authorities consider the area safe.
