Ireland: Waterford Crystal Shut Down

One of Ireland’s top tourist draws has shut down, apparently a casualty of the worldwide economic crisis. The Waterford crystal factory, source of the famous hand-blown and hand-cut glass that bears its name, closed its doors Jan. 30 and shuttered its showroom that drew some 300,000 annual visitors. Overly reliant on U.S. customers, Waterford has been in trouble since 2002 when the U.S. dollar weakened dramatically against the euro. The parent company is seeking a buyer.
