South Africa: Card Skimming Scam Snares the Unwary

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 3rd, 2009 | Trackback

ATM card skimming remains a problem around the country, with the usual mode of operation being obtaining the card’s data using a card reader attached to the ATM and gaining the PIN by looking over the victim’s shoulder as he enters it. Another method is to jam one ATM, then “assist” the victim at another machine, even persuading the user to hand over the card for the helper to insert. He scans the card without the victim seeing it before inserting the card, then asks for the PIN. Once he knows that he can clone the card and access the account. Similarly, credit card skimming occurs at restaurants and other businesses. Travelers should never allow the cards out of their site when using them.
