China: Old Scam Still Works on Single Men
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |It’s a scam neither unique to Shanghai nor particularly new, but it continues to work on men touring alone in the big city, as a writer for the Sydney Morning Herald recently discovered. A friendly young woman engages you in conversation, asks if you will take a photo of her and her friends, and once she “learns” that you are alone invites you to join them. When you do she tells you they’re off to a traditional tea ceremony and you go along, discovering when the bill comes that you’re the only one who thinks his share is exorbitant so you pay it. Shortly after, your new friends leave you with your gullibility and the realization that you’ve been snookered out of more than $100. But you enjoyed the tea, and company.
