Italy: New Room Tax in Effect in Rome

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 5th, 2011 | Trackback

Rome has a new tax on tourists it hopes will raise some $100 million annually to be used on maintenance and promotion of the city’s many attractions. The nominal fee will add a few extra euros to the cost of hotel stays depending on the class of hotel. For three-star hotels, the cost is 2 euros a night; for four- and five-star hotels, three euros (the euro is worth roughly $1.33). Campsites are not immune: they now cost an extra euro per night. Fees are charged on the first ten hotel nights or the first five nights in a campsite.
