Thailand: Phuket Beaches Unseasonably Dangerous

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 19th, 2011 | Trackback

High tourist season when the Andaman Sea is calmest usually runs from December through April in Phuket, but unusual weather patterns from Sri Lanka to Australia have created strong rip currents at popular Karon Beach, where two foreigners have drowned this month. Karon is considered one of Thailand’s best beaches, and warnings are posted when the surf is dangerous, but often tourists ignore the signs. Once the figures are in, the number of drownings on Phuket in 2010 is expected to be lower than in 2009, but still may exceed 100. The lesson is clear: before entering the sea, read the surf, and read the signs.
