Egypt: Unrest May Drive Mubarak from Power
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |At the moment it’s uncertain what will happen with the popular revolt against the 30-year rule of Hosni Mubarak that has swept the nation and captivated the Arab world. Mubarak’s pledge to step down at the end of his term in September was met with popular demands to go now. Some tourist groups in the Sinai beach resort of Sharm El-Sheikh were continuing to enjoy their vacations in the sun, but many others around the country were departing, with several governments, including the U.S., evacuating citizens. Cairo’s international airport became a chaotic scene with many flights delayed or canceled as thousands of people tried to leave the country. Follow media reports for advice about when and whether to continue with plans to visit.
