Ireland: 2008 Lowest Road Death Toll Since 1959
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In 2008, Ireland recorded its lowest number of road deaths since authorities began compiling such records in 1959. The tally of 279 dead is about 10 percent lower than the number of road deaths in 1959, a time when the country had one-eighth the number of licensed vehicles and drivers on the roads that it has today. Officials attribute the decline to extensive educational campaigns against speeding and drunk driving. Driving is still challenging on many of the country’s narrow rural roads, especially in bad weather, and statistics show that the most dangerous day to be on the road is Sunday. Almost half of the deaths (46 percent) occurred on weekends. Not surprisingly, a large percentage of those killed were under age 25, a total of 42 percent of all deaths.
