Japan: Tourists Again Allowed into Tokyo’s Famous Fish Market
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Beginning Jan. 19, tourists will again be allowed to visit Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market after a six-week-long ban that authorities had threatened to continue indefinitely. The ban was put in place to prevent tourists from interfering with the fish auctions but lifted because officials acknowledged that the market is part of Tokyo’s cultural fabric and is appealing to tourists. Authorities will hand out strict guidelines to tourists to control their behavior and will allow them to visit the market only from 5 a.m. to 6:15 a.m.
