Argentina: Labor Strike Halts Transit Nationwide
By Larry Habegger and Laurie Weed | Permalink |A nationwide union strike halted air, road and rail transit Nov. 20, stranding travelers and commuters, and effectively shutting down the capital city of Buenos Aires. All flights through Jorge Newberry Airport (SABE/AEP) were cancelled, as were most flights at regional airports throughout the country. Banks were also closed for the day, along with many schools and non-emergency health services. Led by an anti-government labor movement, workers are demanding better wages and pensions in the face of 25 percent inflation. No violence has been reported and services were expected to resume within 24 hours; however, visitors to Buenos Aires should avoid large crowds and keep informed of the situation via local media.
