Three days of rioting over the sentencing of a labor leader to four months in jail abated Sept. 25, when calm was restored by police. The capital city of Pointe-a-Pitre was littered with burned out vehicles and tear gas canisters. To prevent further unrest, French officials announced that additional police would be sent to the island.
