Effective immediately, Americans needing to have passports issued overseas will no longer be able to obtain them quickly because new technologies used to create them will be available only in the U.S. Traditional passports will still be issued overseas for urgent or emergency travel, but these passports will need to be replaced upon completion of the urgent travel. If planning to travel or reside abroad beyond the life of your current passport, consider replacing it before you leave the U.S.
