Greece: Bad Driver Crackdown Goes Too Far
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Greek officials are trying to improve the country’s reputation for dangerous driving, but an off-duty policeman in Salonica may have taken the enforcement of traffic laws a little too far June 3 when he shot a man for double parking. The incident occurred when two men stopped outside a café to buy breakfast. The officer told them to move their car and in the argument that ensued, the policeman’s gun fired and hit the driver in the leg. The officer was arrested but claimed the gun fired accidentally. Police may be feeling pressure to enforce traffic laws after building a reputation for ignoring violations that has contributed to reckless driving throughout the country.
