Switzerland and Austria: Euro 2008 Soccer Tournament June 7-29
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Switzerland and Austria will host the Euro 2008 soccer tournament June 7-29, and because it is a major sporting event that is expected to draw 5 million fans, concerns have surfaced about possible terrorist attacks. Posts have appeared on Islamist web sites calling for attacks on the tournament, but Swiss authorities have stated that they have seen no concrete evidence that any terrorism plans are under way. Austria has announced that it will reintroduce border checks during the games, so anyone entering Austria for the tournament will need a passport. Matches will be held in Switzerland in Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich, and in Austria in Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Vienna.
