Australia: Bush Fires Devastate Victoria, Kill 200
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The worst death toll ever from wildfires in Australia occurred in recent days when more than 200 people perished in hundreds of fires in Victoria. Some fires occurred within 60 miles of Melbourne. The fires have been fed by drought and extreme heat and the fire danger will remain high so long as the heat continues. Tourist areas have largely escaped damage thus far. In other news, an outbreak of dengue fever occurred in Cairns in Queensland with some 226 cases, prompting officials to vow to stop the disease’s spread. And a measles outbreak occurred in Melbourne, with 11 cases reported since January.
