Somali Piracy: Surge of Attacks in Indian Ocean near Somalia

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 3 comments | April 8th, 2009 | Trackback

Somali pirates seized five ships in 72 hours in the Indian Ocean, moving their main area of operations out of the Gulf of Aden to avoid international naval patrols. A French yacht carrying five tourists off the coast of Somalia was taken as well as a former oceanographic research vessel converted to a live-aboard dive boat based in the Seychelles that had dropped off its British guests just hours before pirates boarded. Cargo and fishing vessels from Germany, Taiwan and Yemen were also hijacked. In another incident, an American cargo ship was temporarily held until the crew fought off the pirates, but the ship’s captain was taken hostage. International naval patrols have reduced piracy in the Gulf of Aden significantly in the past several months, but the pirates appear to be adapting.
