Kenya: Increased Violence Prompts Travel Warning Update

A surge in violent crime and terrorist threats has prompted the U.S. Department of State to issue an updated travel warning that restricts official travel for government employees and advises private citizens to avoid travel in Kenya until the security situation improves. The alert follows a bombing assault on two churches in Garissa July 1, the kidnapping of four international aid workers last month, and an increase in violent attacks in Nairobi. Over the past year, 17 assaults involving grenades or other explosives claimed at least 48 lives and injured more than 200 people. To date, no U.S. casualties have been reported, but the embassy in Nairobi continues to receive information regarding terrorist threats.
